Chinese Bacon Steamed Bun (Gua Bao)

Gua Bao is a popular dish that originated in China and dated back to as far as 400 BC. It's made with a fluffy semi-circular-shaped bao bun stuffed with tender pork belly, cilantro and carrots.

Serves 4 to 6

Chinese Bacon Steamed Bun (Gua Bao)
  • Chinese bacon
  • Frozen Chinese steamed bun (Gua Bao)
  • Cucumber
  • Green onion
  • Cilantro
  • Carrots
  • Hoisin sauce
  • Sriracha hot sauce
  1. Slice the Chinese bacon into about ¼ inch thick and at an angle so that you get longer pieces.
  2. Julienne cut green onion, carrots, and cucumber.   
  3. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a wok over medium low heat. Pan fry the bacon until it is a little bit of crunch.  Set it aside.
  4. Heat the buns (Gua Bao) per manufacturer’s instructions.  
  5. Serve the Chinese bacon in steamed buns with carrots, cucumber, green onion, and cilantro.
  6. Mix both Hoisin sauce and Sriracha hot sauce to taste.
